Field Meal Tips to Make Harvest a Little Easier
Getting meals to the field doesn't have to be complicated! A little planning can go a long way when everyone's schedules are packed. Here are a few of our favorite tips to make feeding your harvest crew easier.
1. Prep Ahead Whenever You Can
Take advantage of slower moments to prep ingredients or make meals ahead of time. Chop vegetables, cook meat, or assemble casseroles the night before. When the next busy day rolls around, you'll be one step ahead!
2. Keep It Easy to Transport
Think meals that travel well and are easy to eat on the go. Sandwiches, wraps, pasta dishes, casseroles, and slow-cooker meals are all great options. Choose containers that seal well to help prevent spills on the trip to the field.
3. Invest in Good Food Containers
Insulated food jars and thermal food carriers (like the Fuel for The Farmer bag) can help keep hot meals hot until it's time to eat. For cold foods, use a cooler with ice packs. Keep perishable foods at safe temperatures, especially when meals will be sitting in equipment or vehicles for a while.
4. Make Extra for Leftovers
If you're already cooking, why not make a little extra? Double a recipe when it makes sense and save the leftovers for another meal. Having something ready to heat up can be a lifesaver when the day runs longer than expected.
5. Don't Forget the Snacks!
Sometimes a full meal isn't always possible right when hunger strikes. Pack easy snacks like granola bars, trail mix, fruit, crackers, or other family favorites to help keep everyone going between meals.
6. Keep Cleanup Simple
Harvest season is busy enough without a mountain of dishes waiting at home. Use styrofoamย containers, pack easy sides, and choose meals that don't require a lot of utensils. A little less cleanup means more time for what matters.
Making Memories, One Field Meal at a Time
Some of the best memories happen around the dinner table โ and sometimes that table is the tailgate of a pickup or the passenger seat of a combine!
Harvest meals are about more than just getting food to the field. They're about showing up for your family, taking care of your crew, and making sure everyone has the fuel they need during one of the busiest seasons of the year.
